Caring for Cashmere properly
As a complex fibre, cashmere needs proper treatment to stay soft and in shape. Following these simple guidelines is neither laborious nor difficult, but will guarantee long-lasting enjoyment of cashmere products.
Washing: On the washing machine, select the wool wash cycle. This wash cycle usually does not involve spinning the clothes, but weighing them, which minimises friction and thus the felting process. Set the wash temperature to "Cold". Any addition of heat (e.g. by washing at 30°) increases the risk of matting. Select the lowest spin speed (usually 400 revolutions per minute). You can use liquid wool, fine or special cashmere detergent and should not add fabric softener. Turn garments inside out, close all buttons and, if possible, place them in the laundry bag.
Drying and ironing: Dry your cashmere knitwear lying on a towel or clothes horse. After drying, iron the cashmere item using the steam function. This has the effect of destroying any possible bacteria and precursors of moths through the heat. Likewise, the moist steam helps to revive the cashmere - it gives it back the natural moisture it loses when it is too dry.
Pilling: The formation of knots, known as pilling, is a natural characteristic of cashmere and is not a quality defect. You can carefully remove the pilling with the help of a pilling comb.
Further care tips: Cashmere does not need to be washed after each wear; it is sufficient to air out cashmere clothing after each wear. If possible, store your clothes lying down and in a storage bag. To protect against moths, use moth paper, lavender sachets or soap by placing them between the garments.
